A law graduate of Université de Paris I and II and the University of Chicago, and a lawyer since 1988, Emmanuel Lulin practised at Debevoise & Plimpton in Paris and New York (1989-1999), and then joined L’Oréal in 1999 as Group General Counsel for Human Resources. In 2007, he set up the Office of the Group Chief Ethics Officer.
Emmanuel’s achievements in the field of ethics are internationally recognized as visionary and innovative:
- First non-American to receive the Carol R. Marshall Award for Innovation in Corporate Ethics from the Ethics & Compliance Initiative in Washington, DC (2015)
- Recognized by the UN as a UN Global Compact SDG Pioneer for Advancing Business Ethics (2018)
- First recipient of the Prix d’Excellence comme Influenceur Éthique award from Université de Cergy Pontoise (2018)
- First non-American to receive the Bill Daniels Being A Difference Award from the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy’s Center for Public Trust (2019)
- On the Attorneys Who Matter list as Top Ethics & Compliance Officer (2012, 2014 and 2017)
Emmanuel Lulin very actively promotes business ethics:
Director of the Ethics Resource Center (since 2016), the Ethics & Compliance Officer Association (2007-2012) and the Cercle d’Éthique des Affaires (2011-2017); former Chair of the Conference Board’s Global Council on Business Conduct; One Young World Advisor (since 2016); former member of the ethics committee of the Agence Française du Développement; UN Global Compact Expert (since 2018); member of Deloitte’s trust and governance think tank (since 2018), President of the Observatoire de la responsabilité sociétale des entreprises (ORSE) work group “Ethique, Responsabilité et Stratégie” (2017).
In 2007, he spearheaded the first master’s degree in business law and ethics at Université de Cergy-Pontoise; in 2012, he created the Club des Professionnels de l’Éthique; in 2016, he inspired the creation of ThinkH+, a virtual think tank about transhumanism, at the Clinique du droit de Sc-Po Paris.
Since 2013, to help promote business ethics based on values, Emmanuel Lulin has given over 110 Master Classes in various major academic and business institutions on every continent. He has also been interviewed over 100 times by major media outlets on every continent.
Since 2007, Ethisphere has recognized L’Oréal as one of the world’s most ethical companies ten times. In 2019, L’Oréal was given top ranking by Covalence among 6,600 global companies for its ethics. L’Oréal won the Grand prix de la Transparence award for its ethical charter (2017 and 2018), the Prix d’excellence Gouvernance Éthique award (2018) and the Prix d’excellence Leadership Éthique award (2018).
